LAGUZ

LAGUZ — Flow, Intuition and Emotional Depth

Laguz is the twenty-first rune of the Elder Futhark. It represents the sound “l,” and its reconstructed name is commonly associated with water, a lake or the sea.

The surviving rune poems describe different forms of water: the open sea, flowing water and powerful natural movement. Water appears as something necessary for life, but also unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

In modern spiritual interpretation, Laguz represents flow, intuition, emotional depth, adaptability and the parts of our inner world that are not always easy to explain through logic.

Laguz reminds us that emotions and intuition contain valuable information, but they require awareness and discernment. We can listen to what we feel without allowing every emotion to control our decisions.

The Meaning of Laguz

Laguz represents:

• water and natural flow;
• intuition and inner perception;
• emotions and sensitivity;
• adaptability during change;
• the unconscious mind;
• emotional healing and release;
• receptivity and imagination;
• movement without unnecessary resistance.

The energy of Laguz is fluid. It does not always follow a straight or predictable path.

Like water, it responds to its environment. It can move gently, remain still, change direction or become powerful enough to transform the landscape.

Laguz teaches us to adapt without losing connection with ourselves.

Laguz and Water

Water is the central historical image connected with Laguz.

It supports life, carries movement and connects distant places. At the same time, deep or turbulent water can hide danger and create uncertainty.

This dual nature is important. Laguz does not represent only calmness and emotional comfort. It also reflects the depths we cannot immediately see and the feelings that may become overwhelming when they are ignored.

Symbolically, water can represent:

• changing emotions;
• memories and unconscious patterns;
• sensitivity to the surrounding environment;
• the ability to adapt;
• creative imagination;
• cleansing and release;
• uncertainty and hidden depth.

Laguz encourages respect for emotional and intuitive processes rather than fear of them.

Laguz in Everyday Life

The energy of Laguz may become noticeable when:

• emotions become stronger or more visible;
• you need to adapt to changing circumstances;
• intuition draws your attention to something important;
• an old emotional pattern begins to surface;
• creativity starts flowing more naturally;
• you need to release feelings you have suppressed;
• logical analysis alone does not provide an answer;
• you are learning to move with change instead of resisting it.

Laguz can indicate a period of emotional development or greater sensitivity.

It may also encourage us to slow down and notice what is happening beneath the surface before making an important decision.

The Balanced Energy of Laguz

When the energy of Laguz is balanced, it supports emotional awareness, adaptability, creativity and a healthy connection with intuition.

A person working with this energy can recognise their feelings without becoming completely controlled by them. They can adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining personal boundaries and practical judgment.

Balanced Laguz energy supports:

• emotional honesty;
• healthy sensitivity;
• creative flow;
• flexibility during change;
• trust in carefully examined intuition;
• the ability to release emotional tension;
• receptivity without passivity;
• acceptance of life’s changing rhythms.

Laguz teaches us that flexibility is not the same as having no direction. Water changes its form, but it continues to move.

The Shadow Side of Laguz

The shadow side of Laguz may appear as:

• emotional overwhelm;
• confusion and lack of direction;
• escaping into fantasy;
• mistaking fear or desire for intuition;
• absorbing the emotions of other people;
• weak or unclear personal boundaries;
• suppressing feelings until they become unmanageable;
• allowing circumstances to determine every decision.

Flow can become passivity when we stop making conscious choices.

Laguz asks us to distinguish adaptation from surrendering control of our lives. Moving with circumstances does not mean accepting everything without question.

The rune also reminds us that sensitivity needs boundaries. We can understand another person’s emotions without taking responsibility for them.

Laguz and Intuition

Intuition is one of the central modern themes connected with Laguz.

Intuition may appear as a quiet feeling, a physical response, a sudden understanding or a persistent sense that something deserves attention.

However, not every strong emotion is intuition. Fear, hope, past experience and personal expectation can influence what we believe we are sensing.

Laguz encourages us to examine intuitive impressions carefully.

We can ask:

• Is this feeling calm and consistent or urgent and frightening?
• Is there practical evidence supporting it?
• Could an old experience be influencing my reaction?
• Does this understanding become clearer with time?
• What responsible action can help me verify it?

Intuition becomes more reliable when it is balanced with observation, experience and critical thinking.

Emotions and Inner Depth

Emotions are not weaknesses or obstacles that must always be removed. They are responses that can reveal our needs, values, fears and experiences.

Laguz encourages us to listen to emotions without treating them as absolute instructions.

Anger may reveal a crossed boundary. Sadness may show that something meaningful has been lost. Fear may warn us of danger, but it can also arise from an old wound. Joy may indicate what supports our development.

Emotional awareness means asking what a feeling is communicating and then deciding how to respond consciously.

Laguz reminds us that emotions can move and change. A feeling experienced today does not define our entire identity or future.

Flow and Adaptation

Water adapts to the shape of its surroundings, but it does not stop being water.

This image reflects the ability to respond to change without losing our essential values.

Healthy adaptation may involve:

• changing a plan when circumstances shift;
• allowing emotions time to settle;
• finding another route towards a goal;
• releasing expectations that no longer fit reality;
• accepting that development is not always linear;
• learning from changing conditions;
• preserving energy instead of fighting every obstacle.

Laguz teaches that resistance is not always strength. Sometimes the wiser response is to move around an obstacle, wait for conditions to change or follow a more natural path.

Emotional Boundaries

Sensitive people may easily notice the moods and needs of others. This can support empathy, but it can also create exhaustion or confusion.

Laguz highlights the need for emotional boundaries.

Healthy emotional boundaries include:

• recognising which feelings belong to you;
• allowing others to experience their emotions without trying to fix everything;
• taking distance when you feel overwhelmed;
• communicating your needs clearly;
• avoiding responsibility for another person’s choices;
• creating time for rest and emotional processing.

Compassion does not require carrying every emotional burden around you.

Creativity and Imagination

Laguz is also connected with imagination and creative flow in modern interpretation.

Creative ideas often emerge before they are fully understood. They may appear as an image, feeling, dream or unexpected association.

This process cannot always be controlled, but it can be supported by creating space for observation, experimentation and reflection.

Laguz encourages us to allow an idea to develop without demanding an immediate final form.

At the same time, creative flow benefits from structure. Inspiration becomes more useful when it is combined with consistent action and practical development.

Questions for Reflection

• What emotions are currently moving through me?
• What might these emotions be communicating?

• Am I adapting consciously or avoiding a necessary decision?
• Do I recognise the difference between intuition and fear?
• Where do I need stronger emotional boundaries?
• What am I ready to release?
• Which part of my life needs greater flexibility?
• What supports my creative flow?
• Can I allow change without losing my direction?

The Message of Laguz

Allow yourself to feel without allowing every feeling to determine your path.

Your sensitivity can become a source of understanding when it is supported by boundaries, observation and conscious choice.

Do not force every process into a straight line. Some changes need to unfold gradually, and some answers become visible only when emotional waters have settled.

Remain flexible, but do not become passive. Listen to your intuition, examine it carefully and choose your actions responsibly.

Like water, you can adapt, move and transform while remaining connected to your essential nature.
