Fortuna — Goddess of Fate, Luck and New Opportunities

Fortuna is the Roman goddess of fortune, chance, changing circumstances and the unexpected turns of life.

Her presence reminds us that life does not always move according to a fixed plan. A period of stillness can suddenly become a time of opportunity. A closed road can reveal another direction. Something that first appears to be an ending may become the beginning of an entirely new cycle.

Fortuna represents movement.

She does not promise that everything will remain stable or predictable. Instead, she teaches us how to recognize the moment when life begins to change — and how to meet that change with awareness, courage and trust.

The Meaning of Fortuna

Fortuna is often understood simply as the goddess of luck. However, her archetype is much deeper.

She represents the forces that change our circumstances: unexpected meetings, new possibilities, sudden decisions, fortunate coincidences and turning points that redirect the course of life.

Her energy can appear when:

• an unexpected opportunity becomes available;
• a difficult period begins to shift;
• an old cycle reaches completion;
• a person must choose whether to accept a new chance;
• life opens a road that was previously invisible;
• control must be released so movement can begin.

Fortuna reminds us that an opportunity is not the same as a guaranteed result. A door may open, but we must still decide whether to walk through it.

Luck creates a possibility. Our choices determine what we do with it.

The Wheel of Fortune

The wheel is one of Fortuna’s most recognisable symbols.

It represents the constant movement of life. Circumstances rise, fall and change. Nothing remains in the same position forever.

The wheel may bring expansion after limitation, movement after stagnation or clarity after uncertainty. It can also remind us not to become too attached to temporary success, because every external condition is part of a larger cycle.

The teaching of the wheel is not to fear change, but to remain connected to your inner centre while the world around you moves.

When you are centred, change no longer feels like complete chaos. You can observe what is ending, recognise what is approaching and choose your next step more consciously.

Fortuna’s Symbols

In Roman art, Fortuna was commonly associated with the cornucopia and the rudder. The cornucopia represented prosperity and the gifts of fortune, while the rudder symbolised her power to steer the course of human life. The wheel or globe expressed the changing and uncertain nature of fortune.

The Wheel

The wheel represents cycles, turning points and changes in circumstances. It reminds us that stagnation is not permanent and that every stage eventually gives way to another.

The Cornucopia

The cornucopia, or horn of plenty, represents abundance, nourishment and opportunities that can enter a person’s life.

Its meaning is not limited to money. Abundance may arrive as knowledge, support, inspiration, a meaningful connection or the chance to begin again.

The Rudder

The rudder represents direction.

Fortuna may bring an unexpected current, but a person must still participate in choosing where that current will lead. This symbol connects chance with personal responsibility.

The Globe

The globe represents uncertainty and the unstable nature of external conditions. Life can change quickly, and security cannot always be found by controlling everything around us.

True stability begins within.

Fortuna Primigenia and the Oracle

One of Fortuna’s most important ancient centres was the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia at Praeneste, now Palestrina. The sanctuary was connected with an oracle where sacred lots were used to seek insight into uncertain situations.

This aspect of Fortuna connects her not only with luck, but also with questions about direction, possibility and the hidden movement of fate.

People turned to her when the future could not yet be clearly seen.

Her archetype therefore speaks to moments when we cannot control every outcome but still need to listen, choose and move forward.

When to Work with Fortuna

The archetype of Fortuna may be helpful when you want to:

• begin a new stage of life;
• move beyond stagnation;
• recognise opportunities more clearly;
• accept positive changes without fear;

Fortuna’s archetype also has a shadow side.

It may appear as dependence on luck, passive waiting, impulsive risk-taking or the belief that an outside force must solve everything for us.

Working with Fortuna does not mean abandoning responsibility. It means learning to recognise the meeting point between circumstance and choice.

We cannot control every event, but we can decide:

• whether we notice the opportunity;
• whether we are ready to accept it;
• whether we repeat an old pattern;
• whether we act when the moment arrives;
• whether we trust ourselves enough to move.

Fortuna opens the possibility. She does not take the step for us.

Fortuna and the Beginning of a New Cycle

Sometimes a new cycle begins quietly.

It may first appear as an idea, an invitation, a conversation or an unexpected change of plan. At that moment, the opportunity may seem too small to be important.

Fortuna teaches us to notice these moments.
