TIWAZ
TIWAZ — Courage, Justice and Purposeful Action
Tiwaz is the seventeenth rune of the Elder Futhark. It represents the sound “t,” and its reconstructed name is associated with the Germanic god Tiwaz, known in Old Norse tradition as Týr.
Týr is remembered for courage, duty and his willingness to accept personal sacrifice for the protection of the wider community. In the well-known story of the binding of the wolf Fenrir, Týr places his hand in the wolf’s mouth as a guarantee of good faith and loses it when the gods complete the binding.
In modern spiritual interpretation, Tiwaz represents courage, justice, discipline, integrity and action directed towards a meaningful purpose. It reminds us that strength is not simply the ability to win. True strength also includes responsibility, honesty and a willingness to accept the consequences of our choices.
The Meaning of Tiwaz
Tiwaz represents:
• courage and determination;
• justice and fairness;
• personal integrity;
• discipline and focused action;
• responsibility for one’s decisions;
• commitment to a meaningful purpose;
• leadership through example;
• sacrifice made with awareness.
The shape of Tiwaz resembles an arrow or spear pointing upwards. Symbolically, it reflects direction, concentration and movement towards a chosen goal.
Tiwaz encourages us to direct our energy clearly. When our actions are connected with our values, we can move forward with greater confidence and consistency.
Tiwaz and Courage
Courage does not mean the absence of fear. It is the ability to take necessary action while recognising the risks and consequences involved.
The energy of Tiwaz can support us when we need to defend our values, speak honestly, make a difficult decision or continue working towards a meaningful goal.
However, courage should not become reckless action. Tiwaz asks us to understand what we are fighting for and whether our actions serve a genuine purpose.
Before entering a conflict, this rune invites us to ask:
Is this struggle necessary?
What am I protecting?
What result am I trying to create?
Am I acting from integrity or wounded pride?
Courage becomes meaningful when it is guided by awareness.
Justice and Personal Integrity
Tiwaz is commonly associated with justice, but justice begins with honesty.
It requires us to examine our own motives, recognise our mistakes and accept responsibility for the effects of our actions. It is easy to demand fairness from others while ignoring the ways in which we may also contribute to imbalance.
Tiwaz teaches that integrity means bringing our words, values and actions into alignment.
This may involve:
• keeping an important promise;
• admitting when we were wrong;
• correcting an unfair situation;
• defending someone who cannot defend themselves;
• making a decision based on principles rather than convenience;
• accepting the consequences of our choices.
Justice is not simply punishment. It is the restoration of balance through truth, responsibility and appropriate action.
Tiwaz in Everyday Life
The energy of Tiwaz may become noticeable when:
• you need courage to make an important decision;
• you are working towards a demanding goal;
• you must defend your boundaries or values;
• a situation requires honesty and fairness;
• you need to remain disciplined;
• you are accepting greater responsibility;
• you must choose between what is easy and what is right;
• you are learning to lead through your actions.
Tiwaz can help us remain focused when progress requires sustained effort. It encourages perseverance, but it also asks us to examine whether the goal still reflects our true values.
Determination is valuable only when it is directed towards something meaningful.
The Balanced Energy of Tiwaz
When the energy of Tiwaz is balanced, it brings courage, clarity, discipline and a strong sense of responsibility.
A person working with this energy can pursue their goals without ignoring the rights or needs of others. They are prepared to make difficult decisions, but they do not use strength merely to dominate.
Balanced Tiwaz energy supports:
• purposeful action;
• healthy ambition;
• fair and thoughtful decisions;
• emotional self-control;
• loyalty to meaningful commitments;
• confidence during challenges;
• responsible leadership;
• the courage to correct mistakes.
Tiwaz teaches that leadership is not based only on authority. It is demonstrated through consistency, honesty and personal example.
The Shadow Side of Tiwaz
The shadow side of Tiwaz may appear as:
• excessive competitiveness;
• the need to win at any cost;
• aggression or unnecessary conflict;
• rigid ideas about right and wrong;
• judging others without examining oneself;
• sacrificing too much for an unworthy cause;
• controlling or authoritarian behaviour;
• refusing to change direction because of pride.
Determination can become destructive when it loses its connection with awareness and compassion.
Tiwaz asks us to distinguish purposeful action from constant struggle. Not every disagreement is a battle, and not every challenge must be overcome through force.
Sometimes courage means continuing forward. At other times, it means admitting that a chosen direction no longer serves us.
Tiwaz and Sacrifice
The symbolism of Tiwaz includes conscious sacrifice. However, this does not mean suffering unnecessarily or giving away everything we have.
A meaningful sacrifice is a deliberate choice to release something less important in order to protect or develop something more valuable.
This may involve:
• giving up a temporary comfort to reach a long-term goal;
• investing time in learning and development;
• releasing pride in order to restore a relationship;
• leaving an unhealthy situation;
• accepting responsibility for a difficult but necessary decision.
Tiwaz encourages us to examine the true cost of our goals.
A sacrifice should be conscious, proportionate and connected with a genuine purpose. Constant self-denial, exhaustion or harm is not proof of spiritual strength.
Tiwaz and Purposeful Action
Tiwaz is an energy of direction. Like an arrow, it requires a clear target.
When our purpose is unclear, we may waste energy fighting unnecessary battles or trying to prove ourselves. When our direction is conscious, discipline becomes easier because we understand why our effort matters.
Purposeful action includes:
• defining a clear goal;
• understanding why it is important;
• creating a realistic plan;
• taking responsibility for each step;
• adjusting the plan when new information appears;
• remaining consistent without becoming rigid.
Tiwaz reminds us that determination is not the refusal to change. A strong person can correct their direction without abandoning their principles.
Conflict and Boundaries
Tiwaz may appear when a conflict requires a direct and honest response.
It supports the ability to establish boundaries, speak clearly and protect what is important. However, it does not encourage aggression for its own sake.
Before responding to conflict, pause and consider:
What outcome do I want?
What boundary needs to be communicated?
Can I speak firmly without humiliating another person?
Is this conflict worth my energy?
What action would be both strong and fair?
Tiwaz teaches us to use strength with precision. Clear boundaries are often more effective than emotional confrontation.
Questions for Reflection
• What goal currently deserves my focused effort?
• What values guide my decisions?
• Where do I need greater courage?
• Am I acting with integrity?
• What responsibility belongs to me?
• Am I fighting a necessary battle or reacting from pride?
• What am I willing to release for a meaningful purpose?
• How can I combine strength with fairness?
• Does my current direction still reflect who I am becoming?
The Message of Tiwaz
Choose your direction consciously.
Courage is not measured by how many battles you enter, but by your willingness to act honestly when something truly matters.
Remain focused, accept responsibility and allow your values to guide your decisions. Do not sacrifice yourself for a purpose that no longer reflects your truth.
Your strength becomes meaningful when it serves justice, protects what is valuable and moves you towards a conscious goal.
Act with courage, but let integrity determine the direction of your power.
